Advanced imaging services we provide

Our hospital has received accreditations from the American College of Radiology (ACR) for many imaging modalities. Our skilled imaging specialists and technologists offer a wide range of imaging services in inpatient and outpatient settings to adults and children. Our board-certified radiologists interpret the results of our diagnostic imaging exams.

Some of the imaging exams we offer include:

  • Computed tomography (CT)—CT scans involve combining a series of X-rays to create a 3D image of an area of the body. These scans allow physicians to see inside the brain and blood vessels to detect signs of an injury.
  • Digital mammography—Mammograms are used to examine breast health and are the most effective method of detecting breast cancer. Breast imaging can help identify abnormal growths, breast cancer, cysts, lumps and mastitis. Digital mammography, also known as 3D mammography, provides clear lesion images, reducing the need for unnecessary biopsies.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—MRI scans use magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of tissue and internal organs. This noninvasive imaging exam can help physicians diagnose and plan treatment for diseases and injury.
  • Nuclear medicine—Nuclear medicine imaging uses tiny amounts of radioactive tracer material and a gamma camera to produce images of the body. This imaging modality allows physicians to detect, monitor and treat diseases within the body.
  • Ultrasound—This imaging method uses sound waves to produce images of the body called sonograms. Ultrasounds allow us to view and monitor internal structures of the body without any radiation.
  • X-ray—X-ray imaging involves a small dose of radiation to produce a picture of an area inside the body. This common imaging method allows us to detect broken bones, infections and dislocated joints.

Detecting lung cancer earlier

Fairview Park Hospital offers low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screenings for patients who meet specific criteria to enhance the early detection of lung cancer. Lung screening examinations are tests performed to find disease before symptoms begin, with the goal of detecting disease at its earliest and most treatable stage. Using LDCT scans to screen smokers for lung cancer reduces the risk of death by 20 percent versus those screened by a chest X-ray, according to a National Cancer Institute study. For high-risk individuals, the benefits of early detection far exceed the risks of low-dose radiation.

Screening criteria

High-risk individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Be asymptomatic (You should not experience coughing blood or wheezing, and must not be diagnosed with severe pulmonary disease)
  • 50-77 years old
  • Have at least a 20-pack per year smoking history
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years

Cardiac imaging

The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) accredited our Echocardiography (ECHO) Lab. This exemplifies that we are dedicated and equipped to offer high-quality cardiac care through heart imaging services to help doctors diagnose cardiovascular conditions. Our hospital also offers pediatric ECHO exams.

Our trained nurses and technicians use a range of specialized cardiac exams and instruments. Specially trained physicians interpret the results of these tests.

Some of the cardiac imaging services we offer include:

  • ECHO—These exams use ultrasound technology to evaluate the heart's movement by creating images of the heart's valves and chambers.
  • Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG)—Electrocardiograms record the heart's electrical signals to monitor heart health and detect conditions.
  • Stress tests—These tests measure the heart's ability to respond to external stress by monitoring a patient during exercise.

Our diagnostic laboratory

Our diagnostic laboratory (lab) is certified by the College of American Pathologists. Our lab is equipped with the latest technology and operated by certified medical technologists and technicians. We also offer the services of an in-house pathologist who is board certified in anatomical and clinical pathology.

Our diagnostic lab provides comprehensive services in a wide range of disciplines and capacities, including:

  • Blood bank—The center where we obtain, store and preserve blood to be used later in transfusions.
  • Clinical chemistry—This involves the analysis of bodily fluids for diagnostic purposes and determining a patient's overall wellness.
  • Hematology—This involves tests that examine blood and blood properties. These tests are commonly used to detect and diagnose anemia and other blood disorders.
  • Microbiology—This involves tests to study the microorganisms living in a patient's body, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites.
  • Pathology—This involves taking samples of bodily tissue to detect and examine disease.

Recognition

Fairview Park Hospital is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for our imaging services in breast ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound.
