Making the Leap from Student to Professional Nurse

HCA Nurse Residency is a year-long, extensive clinical orientation and professional development curriculum for new graduate nurses that helps them transition from student to professional nurse. During the first three months on the job, new nurses hone their clinical and technical skills working alongside experienced preceptors who model patient care. For the remainder of the year, nurse residents continue professional development through routine interactions with a mentor, continuing education courses, and completion of an evidence-based capstone project.

The Year of Nurse Residency

The onboarding activities and professional development curriculum for Nurse Residency have been carefully planned and all are essential to your growth and success as a professional nurse.

Months 1-3

  • Work with a preceptor for patient care. (Note: Some StaRN programs such as periop will extend this timeline.)
  • Complete routine assessments, evaluations of progress, and clinical skills assessments

Months 4-12

  • Meet with a mentor at least once a month and complete activities
  • Attend a monthly residency seminar
  • Complete a capstone evidence-based project
  • Attend graduation

Your commitment to Nurse Residency

We are all excited you are here, stand ready to guide you along the way and are eager to help you be successful. In return, you will need to invest time and effort in this program and in your career. Here are a few specific things you will need to be sure to do:

  • Double check your work schedule and monthly nurse residency seminar schedule. Work with your manager to make adjustments should a scheduling conflict occur.
  • Meet with your mentor at least monthly.
  • Communicate with your mentor regularly.
  • Complete your capstone evidence-based project prior to residency graduation.
  • Keep your residency coordinator informed of any issues that may prevent you from fulfilling the requirements of Nurse Residency.
  • Wear your HCA Nurse Residency badge holder so that others can identify you as a resident.
